Hat Tamale!

Before my haircut, my hair was always too thick to wear most hats, so I've never worn anything but knit caps in the winter. When I got my cut, my hair was also layered to get rid of some of the heaviness, which also meant I could wear hats now. It actually came as a shock after trying on a friend's hat on Saturday night.

Now that my fashion horizons have been opened, I will be hat shopping very soon. I've been looking at a few editorial photos for inspiration.

This Week...

image via Feather Magazine Tumblr

• I wrote: "Oh, Yes!" or "Oh, No": Rihanna's Thug Life Tattoo, Trend Spy: Faux Fur Vests

• I had a lot of work to do over the weekend and a conference call Monday night, but I still made time to relax. One of my New Year's resolutions is to try to work less. It's been a big struggle so far.

I read the first book in the Mortal Instruments trilogy, City of Bones. My thoughts.

• I'm still in my gushy/romance/Sci-Fantasy/YA phase, so I bought Fallen. In my defense, it was on sale and Barnes & Noble doesn't realize that I need to read Sweetly because they don't carry it. Jerks.

• Since her computer wasn't cooperating, our Beauty Director (@BeckyNicoleee) came to my place for the staff conference call Monday and we finally got meet. She's a super sweetheart.

• I went to Target for a book and left with a DIY project for Valentine's Day. I think I'll make it a Feather feature for next month. If anything, it'll be a nice gift for my roommates. Plus, I got two small Batman pails. I don't know what I'm going to do with them, but THEY'RE BATMAN PAILS! Just their existence is a gift to the world.

FINALLY got a paycheck for a story I wrote a month ago. You can see it here (the story, not the paycheck). I blame this ridiculously late payout on the fact that the people in the front office of my complex are totally incompetent and they put the mail in our boxes.

• I started watching Downton Abbey, which I assumed was for old fogies. (Who else watches PBS at night?) Now I'm addicted to it and currently on the second season. I guess I'm officially one of the fogies.

Chalk It Up

If Dana Tanamachi isn't the most amazing artist on the planet for drawing this magazine cover WITH CHALK, then I know nothing of the world. Let me reiterateSHE DREW A MAGAZINE COVER WITH CHALK!

She even left room for Oprah to stand between the words without it being uneven. Now, that's attention to detail.

Fallen

How amazing is the artwork for Fallen? I just bought it and I'm interested to read it. All of these Twilight knock-offs have made me curious and this seems to be one of the most-read series.

I'll let you know how it goes via goodreads.

Return of the Reader

I really loved books as a kid and I've been reading a lot since I graduated. I took a bit of a hiatus when Feather was getting on its feet, but we're back in the groove, so I get to go to the bookstore all the time now and browse the shelves. This video pretty much explains how I felt about the library as a kid. I spent sooo much time there because I made my mom or grandma take me all the time. My sisters do the same, which means the librarians are probably really tired of my family at this point.

I'm thinking about starting a book vlog, but I haven't decided yet. I had an internship in college at a news station  and I learned something very important about myself--I hate the sound of the my own voice. Like, seriously, how do I have any friends with a voice like this? I'd be better off doing like Ariel and giving it away to a wicked queen until I've bagged a man without letting on that my voice sounds like I'm a dorky third-grade student.

By the way, any book suggestions would be really appreciated. And you can befriend me on goodreads.

Cinder-ella

I bought Cinder today. I can't wait to tear through the book.

I actually interviewed the author for Feather Magazine and she was really nice. I'm only on the second chapter, but I'm loving it so far. I'll probably review it for my culture blog and the magazine.

Quote of the Week

“I get worried for young girls sometimes; I want them to feel that they can be sassy and full and weird and geeky and smart and independent, and not so withered and shriveled.”Amy Poehler

Gimme Some Skins

I re-watched a few scenes from the first generation (seasons 1-2) of UK Skins last week and I forgot how much I loved the show. People get crazy about the interpretation of teens on shows like Gossip Girl and The O.C., but they've got nothing on any generation of Skins. With the drugs, sex, partying and complete lack of parental supervision, the Parents TV Council would've had a heart attack if the American version was anything like the original. But the show may have also lasted longer if they stuck to their roots.

But I digress...

My main point: UK Skins is one of the best shows to ever hit television and everyone should at least watch the first generation.

She's a Dandy!

Who said girls can't dress like a dandy and still be feminine. I'm seriously in need of a good wool blazer. And an address in a city with a J. Crew.

Bed Head

This is about how my hair looks after a really good night's sleep. I can't rock it like this, though.

Well, I could, but I don't think it would go over really well at work.

A Joke From Lake Bell

It's my goal in life to deliver this joke just how Lake Bell does and have people think I'm hilarious. But I'd like to do it fully covered up.

House Envy: Bri Emery

I love Bri Emery and not just because her name and my nickname are the same. She does the layout design for Rue, which is probably one of the best online shelter magazines I've discovered. For their holiday issue, Bri got to show readers her new loft in these photos by Bonnie Tsang.

I like my roommates and all, but how long until I can afford to have my own place?

Time for a Hair Change

I've had really long hair for as long as I could remember and I think it's time for a hair change. Nothing too drastic, but this weekend, I'm getting it layered and some length cut off.

Maybe it's just people in Florida, but as a black girl with long hair I get a lot of attention. People come up to me in stores and always want to touch it. It would be nice to just blend in and also to not have so much weight on my head. Plus, I could wash it more easily and styling would be a breeze.

Obviously, I'm really excited about this.

Here are my hair inspirations. The first is the perfect length. The second is the layering I want.

Amy Poehler Channels Old Hollywood

How INSANELY fierce does Amy Poehler look in this photo by Jeremy Goldberg. Can we please get an episode of Parks and Recreation where Leslie goes glam for a day?

Sassy & Sweet: Polka Dots

I've loved polka dots since forever. No matter what you may hear, I started the trend at my high school and then everyone jumped on the bandwagon. It was the same way with Hello Kitty and scented antibacterial.

Anyway, I'm starting a feature here called Sassy & Sweet to show two different ways a trend is styled. I chose sassy and sweet because those are the two ways I style things in my wardrobe.

More on polka dots Friday. I've already inaugurated a new feature on Ruffled Feathers with them.
