Editorial of the Day: Eva Channels Sophia

Photos: Eva Mendes by Txema Yeste for Marie Claire
I love Eva Mendes, but a part of me kind of hates her for being with Ryan Gosling. Why can't we all get feminist boyfriends who break up fights, save women from being hit by cars and have amazing bodies? But it's not like men aren't thinking the same thing about how lucky he is to be with her.

She's channeling Sophia Loren's "femme fatale" style. I've only seen one Sophia Loren film, but I've seen a lot of photos of her and I think Eva really nailed it in this shoot. She has that special quality Sophia had, which allows her to be sexy dressed like this or in sweatpants at the grocery store.

Trend Alert: Mellow Yellow

images

I'm not really one for brights, but I can appreciate them from afar. Yellow has my appreciation-from-a-distance stamp of approval. Let's be honest: it can be hard to pull off correctly. Bright yellow isn't for everyone and muted yellow isn't either. These girls figured it out.

While I'm sure you're looking for one of my long, unnecessary rants on this, I don't have one. Be thankful for the small miracles, guys.

There seems to be a pretty obvious correlation between being a parent and losing all your cool points. Since I use phrases like "cool points," I obviously have no coolness to lose so that's one less thing for me to worry about if I ever have kids. Which is pretty unlikely, by the way. I love children for a few minutes, but I don't really know what to do with them. And I have four younger sisters, so if I don't know by now, I never will.

I like the idea of a mother who hasn't lost her sense of style and isn't covered in baby vomit. I've often heard pregnancy and motherhood make women feel sexier, but they also have to take care of little people so they can't show it too much. But if they had the time, a lot of moms would probably look this fierce 24/7.

Editorial of the Day: Walking on Sunshine

Photos: Tori Praver by Nacho Ricci for Harper's Bazaar Argentina March 2012
Random thought: when I saw this I thought it would be the perfect look update for Taylor Swift. I'm not hating on Tay Tay or anything. Her music's OK. It definitely appeals to my nosy side. She's just stuck in this perpetual adolescence and if she keeps it up, it could ruin her career. No one wants to hear a 30-year-old singing about fairy tales and only wearing cutesy vintage dresses that make her look like she's 14.

The dresses, with the exception of the tight mini dress, have the romantic quality she loves, but they're more mature. The tight dress and blazer could add a little sex appeal to really show that she's growing up. But maybe I've just been watching too much Styled by June and should stop speculating about how to change celebrity style?

I do know one thing, if T-Swift doesn't want any of these dresses, I'll take them all.

Color Story: Hills of Light Part Deux

Photo
I've always wanted to go to Greece, but that's not happening until I hit the lottery (which I don't play) or win some sort of sweepstakes (which I never enter). Obviously, this will remain a dream. But a really nice one, nonetheless.

This photo really appeals to my love for complex paths in towns built on hills. I know I'd be the first one to get lost in this kind of situation, but I still find it intriguing.

So Fetch: You Ain't A Barbie

OK, so I'm not cool. At all. Or edgy. But if I was, I'd wear these shirts from Skinny Bitch Apparel and rock them like there's no tomorrow. Especially, the "Bitch, You Ain't No Barbie" shirt because I spent all last summer obsessed with Kreayshawn's "Gucci Gucci." And I've wanted a Barbie necklace since I saw Nicki Minaj's a year or so before she blew up when she did a freestyle for BET. Plus, I also had this phase in my freshman year of college when I was obsessed with Little Jackie's song, "Black Barbie." I seriously just realized I may be a little (or a lot) obsessed with Barbie culture. When did that happen?

As for the other shirts, I really love Alexander McQueen. He actually died on my birthday a couple of years ago and I always take a moment to commemorate his life. I used to have a Mickey Mouse bedroom back in the day and I live really close to Disney World, so loving the black one is a no-brainer. And I could definitely see my younger sister wearing that "Dimepiece" shirt. If I wasn't saving to move to New York, I'd buy a couple of these and try to rock them.

How would these look with boyfriends jeans and oxfords?

Editorial of the Day: Oh, Boy

Menswear for women's been done before. Yes. My favorite editorial incarnation was Brooklyn Decker by Matthias Vriens for Elle. That editorial was really true to menswear, complete with minimal accessories, and somehow feminine at the same time. I love how this one is barely even menswear in most of the photos, but you can still clearly see the inspiration. It's one extreme or the other with the way these are styled and it's somehow still really cohesive. I also love the little things in this styling, like the polka dot collared shirt layered under the striped one, the pink shirt peeking out on the wrists in the blue outfit, the cloth watch above and the understated ring on her middle finger in a photo below.

My favorite thing about menswear-inspired styling is how contrary it is to the attitude women have about accessories right now. They're just piling it on, but sometimes less is really more. Your bracelets shouldn't always be competing with your outfit.

Also, can we please acknowledge the awesomeness of the studded loafers, platform oxfords and silver Mary Janes?

Editorial of the Day: How Could You Be So Heart-Lace?

Photos: Sarah Gadon by Chris Nicholls for Flare May 2012
I don't think about marriage too much. Frankly, it scares me more than The Ring did when I was in 7th grade (I literally just got over that film.), so it doesn't occupy my thoughts too much. But I do know when I do walk down the aisle (in many, many years), I'll be wearing lace. The hippie/revolutionary in me is obsessed with everything 1960s and lace was huge in wedding dresses back in the day. It still is, but when I saw Lauren Bacall wearing a lace wedding dress in How to Marry a Millionaire, my heart stopped. It's just such a beautiful fabric and I wish I had more occasion to wear it in my every day life.

I love how this editorials shows how differently lace can be styled. It's romantic by nature, but it can also be edgy, sexy and mysterious. I swear if I ever go to a masquerade ball, that black eye mask is mine. And the white dress.

I'll Pencil You In After My Nap

Photo

I barely have time to think some weeks, so I've never really just sat down and thought about all the things I do. I thought it'd be fun (and possibly horrifying) to sit down and make a list of all the stuff I have on my plate right now.

  • Feather: Editor-in-Chief, Lifestyle Director, Entertainment Director, Blog Editor, Human Resources, Writer and whatever else I need to be
  • MyEveryzine: Social Media Coordinator, Writer
  • Job: I clerk about four days a week right now at my day job, which is actually a night job because I work nights. All my shifts are nine hours.
  • Blog: this blog, PLM Tumblr; occasionally on Daily Planet and Change Starts Here
  • Freelance: The Gainesville Sun, mostly for the Entertainment section
  • Gym Rat: I spend at least five days a week working on my fitness, with the exception of last week because I went out of town and when I came back I brought home a 103.1 degree fever. As I write this, I'm coughing up a lung. Sounds sexy, right? It's not.

Now that I'm looking at this list, it's not THAT much. I mean, it's not like I'm not busy, but I did the same amount of stuff and went to school full-time last year. I didn't do the gym stuff last year, though. That was not even on my radar. My radar didn't even know what a gym was.

In all seriousness, I can probably fit one or two more things in, especially after we've filled the Lifestyle Director and Blog Editor positions. Interviews start this weekend. Yeah, I do totally boss stuff like interview people and review resumes.

Editorial of the Day: Girls

Photos: Tess, Sophie and Michelle S by Robert Harper for Playing Fashion April 2012
When I first saw this editorial, it reminded me of the new HBO show Girls. I had the, uh, pleasure of watching it on Monday and it was OK. I didn't hate it, but I'm not sure if I like it either. Let me just stop the speculation right now by saying this is not Sex and the City. It's not glamorous and the characters don't have such strong personality traits that they're all basically parts of one woman. Also, you won't hear anyone say, "Swear on Chanel," on Girls. It'd be more like, "Swear on The Great Gatsby."

Since there's no mention of Chanel, the clothing aesthetic is different from Sex and the City. When you're a twenty-something, money's too tight to even think about designer labels. The show focuses more on incorporating trends, like pleated skirts, with sort of outdated apparel because the characters probably cannot afford to buy an entirely new wardrobe every season. All the outfits in this editorial are on trend, but the tone of the photos and the way the clothes fit the models are very similar to how they do things on the show. It's put together, but you won't turn any heads walking down the street.

Did you watch Girls? What did you think?

Editorial of the Day: Neon's Back

Photos: Eve by Max Abadian for Flare
Tupac's not the only thing that's back. (How creepy-yet-awesome was that Coachella performance, by the way?) Neons are back and I've been insanely excited since I saw a story on them in Glamour earlier this year. Flare had an interesting spin on the trend, not totally committing to it in clothes, but definitely going the full mile on the hair.

I'd sell my entire closet for the neon green dress. Well, not really, but I'd trade in a few designer bags. It's one of those pieces that takes a used idea and turns it into something new.
